A cantilever bridge can be an excellent choice for replacing a missing tooth. A cantilever bridge, unlike a traditional bridge, uses a tooth on one side of the restoration for support. It can be made of metal, ceramic, or ceramic covering metal, and typically requires multiple appointments to complete the process. This option is typically considered in situations where the teeth are not subject to strong chewing forces, and the desire is to remove as little healthy tooth structure as possible to support the bridge. At the first appointment, your doctor will take an impression or mold of your teeth for the temporary bridge. Next, the neighboring tooth is prepared to make room for the bridge. They will become the support structure for your new tooth. At this point, another impression is taken of the prepared tooth, which will be used to create the final bridge. In the meantime, a temporary bridge is made and put into place while your final restoration is being expertly created by a dental laboratory at a follow-up appointment, the temporary bridge is removed and the final bridge is fitted and secured to your teeth. Once completed, your missing tooth has been replaced and the area is restored to optimal function and appearance.
