After surgically facilitated orthodontic therapy, follow these care instructions to ensure proper healing immediately after the procedure. It's important to follow your doctor's recovery instructions for the type of anesthetic used. It's normal to experience some discomfort in the first few days following SFOT. Take any pain medication prescribed by your doctor as directed. If antibiotics are prescribed, be sure to take them for the indicated length of time. Refrain from any physical activity for the first 24 hours. Swelling is common and may peak two or three days after SFOT; ice packs can be used to help reduce any pain or swelling. Propping your head with pillows when lying down will aid in both swelling and bleeding. Consume only clear liquids for the first 24 hours, then eat only soft foods for up to two weeks. Do not use straws or smoke as these can cause bleeding and hinder healing. After 24 hours, follow your surgeon's guidelines on when to begin brushing again. When you brush your teeth, avoid the gum tissue. Be sure to clean the brackets of your braces to dislodge any food that may be trapped. Refrain from flossing until told by your doctor and be careful not to rinse vigorously for at least the first 24 hours. Only use devices such as retainers or night guards. Once your doctor advises if stitches were used, they might dissolve on their own. If non-dissolvable stitches are used, they will be removed during a follow-up visit. Your doctor will monitor the healing process over the next few months, so it's important to maintain your follow-up appointments. If you experience persistent pain, bleeding, or signs of infection, such as fever, redness, and swelling, contact your doctor's office for assistance.
